Mayor
Neil Elkins was sworn-in as Mayor of Huntingburg on January 1, 2024.
He serves on the Executive Committee for Dubois Strong, the Board of Directors for the Dubois County Emergency Management Agency, and the Local Emergency Planning Committee.
The Mayor of the City is the Chief Executive of the city and is responsible for the overall operation and efficiency of city government. The mayor's elected term of office is four years with no restrictions on the number of terms which can be served. Responsibilities of the Mayor's office include:
- Enforcing ordinances of the city and statutes of the state
- Supervising employees; appointing, suspending, or removing departments heads, employees and most board and commissions
- Approving or vetoing ordinances and resolutions of the legislative body
- Fixing salaries
- Preparing the city budget
- Policy implementation
The Mayor oversees three municipally owned utilities (electric, water & gas) and the departments of wastewater, street, planning, safety, police and fire.
The Mayor of Huntingburg sits on the Board of Public Works & Safety and appoints four other persons. The major functions of this board are to oversee police and fire protection and the functions of public works including streets and sewers.
